I get pretty stoked for every wedding, but this one was extra special because Shannon is my cousin. I spent a handful of nights faking sleep in her bedroom, the one with plastic glow-in-the-dark stars stuck all over the ceiling, laughing so hard my aunt would have to tell us to be quiet. But I'm happy to report that 20-something years later, Shannon is the same. I don't think she has still has the glow stars on her bedroom ceiling (maybe?), but she is still incredibly fun, sweet, and silly.
During their engagement session, Shannon told me she was worried about me not enjoying the wedding if I was also photographing it. I'd never shot a relative's wedding before, but now I feel any future cousins getting hitched need to have me photograph it. I can't imagine attending any other way. I got to see everything - the getting ready, the side conversations, the tender times, the guys planning a few antics, and the sweet Mama's tearing up at random moments throughout the day. That's the best way to see a wedding - to see it all. The behind-the-scenes. The buttoning and pinning and hair-spraying. And to that, add the comfort that comes with knowing the bride her entire life, with being surrounded by my own family while I work, and being able to put my camera down for a few songs to rock out - it was incredible day.
When I got married a few years ago, Shannon asked if she could bring her new boyfriend as her wedding date. That new boyfriend was Andrew and I don't think it was coincidence that he caught the garter during the reception, amiright!? I was looking forward to getting to know Andrew better during their engagement session and the whole way there, I was thinking how he must be silly just like Shannon. And if by "silly" you mean "a little more serious than I expected but I see how it works perfectly for Shannon because he always laughs at her," then yes, Andrew is silly.
Shannon + Andrew's wedding day was absolutely darling. Everyone laughed, the food (and cake! insane!) was so delicious, and their portrait time might just be my new favorite images. Nothing like the pressure of a dipping sunset to make a photographer hustle.
Many thanks to the wonderful staff at Morningside Inn - their hospitality is unmatched, their cous-cous salad is still giving me happy dreams, and if you're looking for sun-streaked rolling hills upon rolling hills, then this is where you ought to get married. And make sure Lauren is your wedding coordinator because not only is she glamorously tall and beautiful, she will make sure your day is flawless. Thank you!
Hope you are both bundled up warm in Alaska - enjoy your sneak peak!
